Women's Health Truth Month — Week 4 — Client Story
She Started at 68.
A Few Months In,
She Is Unstoppable.
Kathy's story is not about a number on a scale. It is about a woman who chose to keep going.
Kathy had never touched a barbell in her life. She had just lost her husband. And in June 2026, at 68 years old, she walked into her first strength training class. A few months later, she squatted 105 pounds.
This is the last post in our Women's Health Truth Month series. We started with the science. We talked about hormones, bone loss, and autoimmune health. But none of that research means much without a real person to put a face on it.
Kathy is that person. I asked her seven questions. Here are her answers, in her own words.
Where were you physically and mentally when you started? What made you decide to actually start?
Kathy
"When I started this journey, honestly, my mental state was pretty fragile, but improving. I had recently lost my husband to cancer and was climbing out of a pit of isolation. My spirit was wounded. My body was tired. I knew I needed to be in a different place. I was looking for an escape from my thoughts, but also a safe place to work my body back into shape."
I want to sit with that for a second. She was not coming in for a summer challenge. She was not chasing a number on a scale. She was grieving, and she was brave enough to show up anyway.
She had used a treadmill. A stationary bike. Maybe a 5-pound dumbbell once. That was the full list. She had never stood under a barbell. And she was 68 years old.
Was there a moment early on where something clicked? where you realized this was different?
Kathy
"The thing that clicked for me instantly was the gentle instruction that was firm and helpful at the same time. The encouragement from the other ladies in the class was a driver too. Not a competition or comparison, but a doable and fun situation."
This is what small-group training is supposed to feel like. Not a race. Not a showcase. Just a group of women showing up, doing hard things, and cheering each other on.
"I never envisioned myself, at 68 years old, lifting, using kettlebells, or any other type of exercise equipment. I am learning new things and feel pretty accomplished using them correctly."
Kathy, Refinery member since June 2026What's something specific you can do now that you couldn't do when you started?
Kathy
"Knowing that I can learn new things has helped me in so many ways, at home and in everyday life. I am proof that you can learn new things at any age."
She came in not knowing how to use any equipment beyond a treadmill. Now she moves with confidence. That carries over. When you learn that your body can do hard things in the gym, you start to trust it outside the gym too.
Has there been an "I can't believe I just did that" moment in class?
The Turning Point
"Here I was, barely able to put one foot in front of the other when I started, to doing a 105-pound barbell back squat. My strength surprised me. I had come so far in so many ways. Attitude shift!"
Let that land. A woman who had never used a barbell in her life, who walked in the door grieving and exhausted, squatted 105 pounds within her first few months.
The science backs this up. Women's muscles respond to strength training at every age. The body does not stop being able to grow and adapt. It just needs the right program and the right environment.
Kathy is not the exception. She is what happens when a woman is given the right tools and enough time.
Has training changed anything about your day-to-day life outside the gym?
Kathy
"There are many things that have changed in my day-to-day life since starting strength training, such as a much better outlook on life, making exercise a priority, and basically going about living this life. I don't want to have to be that frail old woman who can't carry in a bag of groceries or lift a grandchild to give them a hug."
Carrying groceries. Picking up a grandchild. Getting up off the floor. These sound like small things until they are not easy anymore. Strength training is what keeps them easy. That is the whole point.
Has how you think about your body changed since you started?
"Our bodies are not just an outward shell to be admired, but an inward shell to be strengthened. When you nurture your body correctly, your life is better in every other way. We are so much more than just a pretty face or perfect shape."
KathyThat is not something a fitness ad taught her. That is something she figured out by showing up and doing the work. Her focus shifted from how her body looks to what her body can do. That shift changes everything.
What would you tell a woman who is on the fence about starting?
Kathy's Answer
"I am not shy about telling my friends, or even slight acquaintances, how much better I feel since starting this program. You have to start somewhere, so why not here? I have, hopefully, another 25 years on this earth, and I want to enjoy them. Strength training is not just for your muscles. It is for your soul and spirit, too."
There are still hard days. Days she does not want to be around anyone. Days when sleep was bad the night before. She is honest about that. But she shows up anyway.
Her Takeaway
"Amy is a constant source who shows up and pushes through, so I can too. The main takeaway is that Amy gave me an 'I can do this, too' attitude."
She pushes through because she has watched other people push through. That is what showing up in community does. It raises your own ceiling.
A Note From Me
I have coached a lot of women. Every single one has surprised me at some point. But coaching Kathy has been one of the biggest reminders of why I do this work.
She walked in during one of the hardest seasons of her life. She did not know what she was doing. She was scared. And she showed up anyway. That takes more courage than most people know.
Kathy, thank you for letting me share your story. And thank you for showing every woman reading this what is possible.
If you have been thinking about starting, this is your sign. You do not need to have it all figured out. You just need to show up.
